Each year the AFTC recognizes Fox Terrier and member owner teams for their achievements in multiple disciplines. Our breeds are eligible to compete in breed, obedience, agility, earthdog and tracking competitions. While it isn’t easy to train a Fox Terrier, it is certainly rewarding and most definitely enhances the bond between a Fox Terrier and their person! The newsletter makes space every year for owners to tell us all a little about their award winning Fox Terriers. Thanks to the AFTC for the recognition and congratulations to the winners!!

"Jimmy" has been my faithful companion for the past 12+ years. He finished his championship at 16 months then started on his performance career. He has been a reliable and enthusiastic worker, always willing to learn something new. "Leibshen" and I make a pretty good team and she sure lives up to her name "Sweetheart" This little girl loves to show. She finished her championship in 9 shows and then her obedience Open title in 3 shows. She earned her Novice agility title in 3 shows with a lst place in her height division each time. One of her loves is Earthdog and "get the rats" are her favorite words. We are now working on Tracking...she has it down - it is her handler that has to learn and find time to take her out! Please give a big hand to Leibshen

CH High Mountain Duece's Wild NJP JE CGC
Smooth Fox Terrier

"Duece" is a social butterfly. He accomplished a first in his agility career recently when he did not visit the judge, leash runner or jump setters at a trial. What a time saver! Duece is my first agility dog and I am very proud of his success. He now has two legs in Novice Standard and Novice JWW and the plan is to continue working in agility, rally and obedience. When he was a puppy, he loved streaking through the house trailing a roll of toilet paper and digging up my flowers. Having a good time is high on his priority list and he can be naughty & boisterous, a challenging companion for Lili, our other smooth. Duece is the best squirrel and rabbit chaser in the neighborhood too!

"Will" is an outgoing and friendly dog with an affection for small furry creatures which makes him a natural earthdog. He exudes high energy that I found at times somewhat detrimental in the show ring but like our breed standard says.....he had a lively and active appearance! Will can be rather outspoken so when I worried about thieves taking him from my car I was assured by my friends that the thieves would bring him back in a hurry. Will can be my greatest joy and my greatest headache all at the same but I am up for that challenge as I love him dearly.

"Julian" is the new kid in our foxy family to take up agility. After his breed career he was bored being a "kitchen dog". We started obstacle work and he was an absolute natural! He has a beautiful jump style and his bubbly enthusiasm abounds on every run. Once he learned that the name of the game is to stay with Mommy and don't go visiting other rings, he did really, really well. Julian attained his agility titles in three days of trialing with double Q's each day. Julian has been terrific fun as a show dog and now this.....a talented, enthusiastic agility dog. It is a joy to trial with such a happy boy.

'Luna' came into the world on Christmas Day 2007. What a great Christmas present she was! Luna was originally going to a pet home, but as she began to mature I could see how beautiful she was becoming. Thanks to Trudy Haines, Evelyn Laughlin & Claire Hoffman, who helped convince me that I needed to swap puppies. Luna, or 'The Lunatic', was quite a handful in the show ring as a youngster. She wanted to take on anything and everything in her way. Despite those antics she was Best In Sweepstakes at the Fox Terrier Fanciers of Puget Sound specialty show, Winners Bitch at the Northern California Fox Terrier Club specialty show, at Montgomery County Kennel Club she was 2nd out of 15 in the tough Bred By Exhibitor class, and in the ribbons in the same class the other 3 days of that weekend. Time to try earthdog! After 3 weekends of tests Luna earned her Junior Earthdog title at 10 months old. She obviously inherited her mother's working ability - 'Casey', Ch Windfall Thomas Crown Affair ME, is a Master Earthdog and AFTC Versatility Award winner also. In January of 2009, at 12 months old, Luna finished her conformation title in style by going Best of Breed over several specials, including the #1 female in the country. As of August 2009, Luna is a group placer, and is ranked in the top 20 in breed points, thanks to handler and friend, Lesli Smith. I began my involvement in Smooth Fox Terriers by first getting involved with earthdog. Conformation came later. It makes me very happy to own several Smooths who have beauty AND brains.

"Shawn" retired from an exceptional conformation career and needed a “job” to do. I signed up for a beginning agility class and he had so much fun earning treats, doing the jumps and other obstacles, and interacting with the people and dogs (sometimes too much), that we kept on going. Agility seems to have made him more fun loving and outgoing. The remarks I hear most often from those who watch us at shows are that he jumps “way” above the bar. This ‘air time’ slows us down, but we get a lot of oohs and aahs from the spectators. I’ve met a lot of fun people and dogs along the way. We will continue to train and have fun.

"Warren" came from Carol Silva as pick of the litter when he was four months old. He was a stunning dog even as a puppy. With large entries, he won best puppy in match four times, including one all terrier match. People just loved him and I could barely walk anywhere without someone stopping me to tell me they thought he was beautiful. He finished his championship quickly with limited showing against some wonderful competition. Since I work at the Humane Society I was able to bring him to work with me every day. He is an ambassador for the breed and has every woman who works with me wrapped around his paw. He is used as a temperament testing dog to see if other dogs are dog-aggressive and is the complete gentleman who loves his job. He gets more hellos in the morning than I do! As an earthdog , Warren took a while to get it, but once he did, he was an energetic competitor. He is working at Senior level now, trying to get past that confusing exit without any rats. As far as the future goes, I think we will be trying tracking next. He keeps his nose to the ground so much that I think he would enjoy it.

"Zorra" is my first bred-by champion. She is pretty and a great mover. Zorra loves earthdog trials and is currently working on her master’s title. She is an easy- going girl who gets along with all the other dogs. We will be starting an obedience class this summer to prepare for Rally obedience.
Bodie Bodacious RN JE
Wire Fox Terrier
Owned by Teresa Randall
As a result of a puppy mill raid, Bodie came into my rescue program at 4 months of age. It wasn’t long before I was charmed by his terrier –ness. He’s everything you’d want in a performance dog: confident, alert, active, affectionate, sociable and larger than life! As an Earthdog, he is a natural. Bodie “tunneled” his way to his Junior title quickly and easily. He earned all three legs consecutively. The icing on the cake was that his third and final leg was earned at the first Terrier Only Performance Summit (TOPS) show in May 2008. Before trying his paw in Rally obedience I knew he needed to mature. We trained for another year and at age 2 ½ I entered him in his first Rally trial. Much like earthdog, he earned his Rally Novice title in three straight shows too! Though his scores didn’t garner us any placements, his attitude and zest for doing things his way was appreciated by the crowd!
